A survey on the distribution of booklice, other allergenic arthropods, and fungi in houses in Tokyo

Abstract

 Recent studies have shown that abooklouse,Liposcelis bostrichophila (Psocodea,Liposcelididae), is a common respiratory allergen among Japanese asthmatic patients. However , limited studies have investigated on the distribution of booklice (Liposcelididae) in houses. We conducted environmental surveys during the summer and autumn of 2011 in 20 houses in Tokyo. In addition , we investigated the distributions of house dust mites and fungi and examined their associations with the booklice distribution. In residential environments , more booklice tended to be found (1) in apartment houses than in detached houses; (2) in the bedrooms of apartment houses; (3) in sunless rooms; (4) in rooms containing Japanese tatami mats; (5) in bedrooms where American house dust mites (Dermatophagoides farinae) were also found; and (6) in houses with high levels of house dust. Among the airborne fungi, Aspergillus section Restricti was most frequently observed in both the summer and autumn, and A. conicuswas particularly prevalent. Because L. bostrichophila, D. farinae, and A. conicusoften propagate at the same time in residential environments, we hypothesized that residents experience many opportunities for simultaneous exposure to these biological allergens.
